It's alive!

Submitted by sverma on Wed, 2014-03-19 09:00

Given the recent excitement of dead/alive discussions about OLPC and olpc, I've put together a short set of questions to help assess where the "organization" is. By organization, I don't mean a company or an institution, but the organization in general. The questions are about mission, vision, strengths, and so on.

Here's the survey.

Coffee table books

Submitted by sverma on Sat, 2014-02-22 19:23

Coffee. I'm a fan! I have a coffee table at home as well, although my kids use it to stage their Lego handiwork, so it's hardly used as a coffee table. Whether you have a coffee table or not, here are three versions of a coffee table book that we produced for various community summits. These books were given away as raffle prizes, but these are also for anyone to purchase. The pricing is at cost, as determined by Blurb, the press that produces the paper copies. Pick a softcover version, or a hardcover with a dust jacket.

Creativity and constraints

Back in 2012, we gave all attendees of the OLPC SF Community Summit 2012 a bag of lenses, some sticky tape and other ways to place a tiny lens on top of the XO's fixed-focus camera and convert the Telescope activity into a microscope like magnifier. The lens itself came from a decorative acrylic cabochon priced at about 2 cents a piece! You can read more about the Tuk Lens Kit here.

The Hour of Code experience

Submitted by sverma on Sat, 2013-12-28 00:33 and Computer Science Education Week organized an event two weeks ago called "Hour of Code", where they proposed that every school in the US spend one hour to get  their feet wet and understand the concept of code. The event was fairly well-organized, with enough information and handouts for teachers, parents, and principals and several tutorials for K-12. I decided to organize a "Hour of Code" event at my kid's school in San Francisco.

Summit'ing the community for a while now

Submitted by sverma on Fri, 2013-09-27 13:52

I looked back into the pictures from the years past. On a whim, we did a poster based on the OLPC Austria design. We left the inside blank, in the hopes that the community would come and fill it. And fill it, they did!

Here are the posters from 2010, 2011 and 2012. We'll have one this year as well. Be here and personalize it!
